12V AC in a Camper Van: Is It Worth It?
A few years ago, if you asked whether air conditioning in a camper van was worth it, our answer probably would have been, "It depends."
Today?
After installing numerous 12V AC systems and seeing how our clients actually use them, we'd say it's one of the most worthwhile upgrades for the right van and electrical system. Especially if you plan to travel with pets, young kids, or in warmer climates on a regular basis.
Here's what we've learned.
12V AC Has Come a Long Way
Older air conditioning options often required shore power, a noisy generator, or a very large electrical system that wasn't practical for many van owners.
Today's 12V air conditioners are a different story. Not to mention the cost of a high quality lithium battery has decreased a bit in recent years!
Units like the Dometic RTX 2000 are designed specifically for off-grid van life, making it possible to stay comfortable without relying on campground hookups.
That doesn't mean they're right for every van, but they have become a practical option for many travelers.
Comfort Changes How You Travel
One of the biggest benefits of 12V AC isn't just staying cool.
It's having more flexibility.
With a properly designed system, you can:
Sleep comfortably on warm nights.
Travel during the summer without constantly searching for cooler temperatures.
Bring pets along with greater confidence.
Take breaks during the day without sitting in an unbearably hot van.
Enjoy your van in a wider range of climates.
Many of our clients tell us they simply use their vans more once they have reliable air conditioning.
The Biggest Mistake We See
The biggest misconception is thinking that adding AC is just about installing an air conditioner.
It's not.
Your AC is only one part of the system.
It also depends on:
Battery capacity
Charging while driving (DC-to-DC charging)
Solar (when appropriate)
Shore power charging
Proper wiring and system design
If those components aren't working together, your AC may not perform the way you expect.
That's why we almost always evaluate the entire electrical system before recommending an AC installation.
The second biggest mistake we see? Waiting to add an AC until your van is built out. Not impossible, but not ideal either. It means extra time and money spent remodeling vs installing the unit when your van is still an empty canvas to be designed.
Every Van Is Different
We've upgraded everything from empty cargo vans to professionally built camper vans and older conversions.
Sometimes a client already has an electrical system that's ready for AC. This is a rare case but it does happen. Sometimes, it is only a few minor upgrades to make it work.
Other times, we recommend battery upgrades, improved charging, or other electrical improvements before adding the air conditioner. Some systems need a full overhaul. And sometimes we have to tell that optimistic DIY builder that they system they already purchased won’t run their 12V AC… But ultimately, our goal isn't simply to install another product.
It's to build a system that works reliably for how you actually travel.
Is It Worth the Investment?
For many people, yes.
If you travel in warm climates, camp off-grid, spend extended time in your van, or simply want a more comfortable experience, 12V AC can completely change how enjoyable your adventures are.
But the key is making sure your electrical system is designed to support it.
Best case, we are starting with an empty van and we will guide you all along the way. If your van is already built out, don’t worry! We can still help you get the system you want.
Start with a Plan
If you're considering adding 12V AC to your existing van, we recommend starting with a one-hour diagnostic session.
We'll evaluate your current electrical system, discuss how you use your van, and determine exactly what upgrades, if any, are needed to support air conditioning. If you haven’t yet purchased your electrical system, this is also a great time to investigate what kind of system you will need to power your AC, and we can help you install that too!
That way, you'll have a clear plan before purchasing components or starting the installation.
Because the goal isn't just to add AC.
It's to build a system that keeps you comfortable for years of adventures to come.
