Three Smart Ways We Optimized Storage in This Existing Camper Van Build
When people think about creating more storage in a camper van, the first instinct is often to add more cabinets.
But after building and upgrading countless vans over the years, we've learned that better storage isn't always about adding more, it’s about making the space work harder.
In one of our recent projects, we focused on maximizing functionality while keeping the van feeling open and comfortable. Here are three upgrades that made a huge difference.
1. A Murphy Bed Instead of a Fixed Bed
A permanent bed is one of the biggest space commitments in any camper van.
While it works well for some layouts, it also means a large portion of your floor space is dedicated to sleeping—even when you're not using it.
That's why we love Murphy beds.
When it's time for bed, you simply pull it down.
During the day, it folds up against the wall, opening up the living area for everything else. Whether you're working inside the van, relaxing with your dog, changing clothes after a ride, or simply enjoying a rainy day indoors, having that extra floor space completely changes how the van feels.
It's one of our favorite ways to create a multi-purpose interior without sacrificing sleeping comfort.
2. A Slide-Out Fridge Tray
Sometimes the smallest upgrades have the biggest impact.
Instead of reaching awkwardly into a cabinet or moving gear every time you need something from the fridge, we installed a slide-out fridge tray.
With one simple pull, the refrigerator slides completely out into the aisle, making everything inside easy to reach.
It might seem like a minor detail, but when you're accessing your fridge multiple times a day, convenience matters.
It's one of those upgrades that quickly becomes something you can't imagine living without.
3. Fold-Away Seating with a Fenton Mobility Seat
Extra seating is great, until it permanently takes up valuable floor space.
For this build, we installed a fold-away seat from Fenton Mobility.
When guests are along for the adventure, there's comfortable seating available.
When it's not needed, the seat folds away, opening up the interior and creating more room for gear, movement, or simply making the van feel larger.
It's a perfect example of designing for flexibility instead of committing valuable space to features that aren't used all the time.
Great Storage Starts with Great Design
One of the biggest misconceptions about van design is that adding more cabinets automatically makes a better build.
In reality, too many cabinets can make a van feel cramped, dark, and less functional.
Our goal is always to design around how our clients actually travel.
Do they need more room for bikes?
Do they work remotely?
Do they travel with dogs?
Do they spend weeks off-grid or mostly take weekend trips?
The answers to those questions guide every design decision.
Sometimes that means adding storage.
Other times, it means removing something to create a more versatile space.
The Best Van Is the One That Fits Your Lifestyle
There's no one-size-fits-all layout.
The best camper van is the one that supports the way you adventure.
For this client, that meant prioritizing flexibility, open living space, and smart storage solutions over simply adding more cabinetry.
The result is a van that feels larger, functions better, and adapts easily to whatever adventure comes next.
If you're planning a custom build or looking for ways to improve your current van we'd love to help you think through the possibilities. Often, a few thoughtful upgrades can completely transform how your van works without requiring a full rebuild.
