What to Expect at your Diagnostic Session

When something isn't working in your van, you probably want two things: to understand what's wrong and to know what it will cost to fix it.

And that’s why we always start our projects with a diagnostic session.

Here's what that process looks like:

Why We Start With a Diagnostic

Van systems can be more complicated than they appear from the outside. A heater that won't start, for example, could have several different causes. An electrical issue might be related to a component, the wiring, the installation, or any combination.

Without inspecting the van and testing the system, we would be guessing at the cause. And a guess isn't a great foundation for a repair estimate.

A diagnostic session gives us the opportunity to investigate the problem, identify the issue, and determine what needs to happen next. It helps us recommend a repair based on what's actually going on rather than jumping to conclusions or replacing parts unnecessarily.

And, we don’t just work on vans. We also service and upfit RVs and overlanding vehicles too.

What Happens During a Diagnostic Session?

1. We start by listening to you.

You know your van better than anyone. We'll ask what you've noticed, when the issue started, what you've already tried, and whether anything has changed recently. If the problem is intermittent, details about when it happens can be especially helpful.

We'll also talk about how you use your van and what you need it to do. A van that's used for weekend trips has different priorities than one that's your full-time home or your mobile workspace. It’s not just about fixing the problem today. It’s also about making sure you have a long-term solution. Sometimes the cheap fix will mean more costs down the road and we can help you avoid that!

2. We inspect the system and investigate the problem.

Next, we look at the relevant components, inspect the installation where appropriate, and run tests to narrow down the cause. The exact process depends on the issue. Diagnosing a heater problem looks different from investigating a battery/charging system.

Sometimes the cause is straightforward. Other times, it takes a bit more to understand what's happening. We want to be thorough enough to make a sound recommendation.

3. We explain what we find.

Once we've gathered enough information, we'll walk you through our findings and explain the options. Our goal is for you to understand what's going on with your van, not feel overwhelmed by technical details or pressured into a repair you don't understand.

4. We discuss the next steps and repair costs.

With a clearer understanding of the issue, we can discuss the recommended repair, the work involved, and the associated costs. If further troubleshooting is needed before we can confirm the cause or provide an accurate estimate, we'll explain that, too. We can also give you a solid timeframe on when we can get your parts in and get the work done. No more lingering in “RV repair jail” at the dealership!

A diagnostic session doesn't necessarily mean the repair itself will be completed that day. It gives us a starting point for making a plan. Most of our diagnostic sessions require additional time at our shop.

Why We Don't Give Repair Quotes Over the Phone

We know it can feel easier to call a few shops, describe the issue, and compare prices. But with van repairs, the same symptom can have several different causes, and those causes can require very different solutions. When you call around to price match, you can’t actually get apples to apples comparisons. Are they using the same quality parts ? Do they have the same level of experience? Having an experienced professional troubleshoot and repair your rig is different than a hobbiest who watched a few YouTube videos.

If we give you a number before seeing the van, we're making assumptions about the problem, the installation, the parts involved, and the time required. That number might not reflect the work your van actually needs.

We'd rather be upfront about that than give you a low estimate that changes once we begin working.

Starting with a diagnostic also helps us avoid recommending a repair that addresses only the symptom instead of the underlying issue. We care about doing quality work and helping you get the most out of your van, which starts with understanding what we're working with.
