The Importance of Winterizing Your camper Van
As the temperatures start to drop, it’s time to start thinking about winterizing your van.
It might not be the most glamorous part of van life, but trust us, a little prep now can save you a lot of time (and money) down the road.
What Happens If You Skip Winterization
We’ve seen firsthand what happens when vans aren’t properly winterized, and it’s not pretty. This summer, several vans came into our shop with burst plumbing lines, cracked fittings, and damaged water pumps, all because water was left sitting in the system over winter.
When temps dip below freezing, that leftover water expands, creating pressure that can damage your plumbing, fittings, and even your tanks. By the time spring rolls around, you could be facing leaks, electrical issues, and repairs that easily could’ve been avoided.
What Winterization Involves
Winterizing isn’t just draining your tanks (though that’s a big part of it). Here’s what we do in a standard van winterization service:
Drain and flush the water system
Add RV-safe antifreeze to protect water lines and pumps
Inspect for leaks, cracks, and worn seals
Check your heater, electrical, and battery systems
Review your van’s setup to make sure it’s ready for storage or cold-weather travel
If you plan to keep traveling through the colder months, we can also help you prep your van for winter adventures, think Espar heaters, insulation upgrades, and battery system checks so you can stay warm, safe, and comfortable.
Why It Matters
A proper winterization is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment and keep your build in top shape. Even a few missed steps can lead to thousands in avoidable repairs. We’ve seen everything from minor leaks to full system replacements and every single one could’ve been prevented with an hour or two of prep.
Stay Ahead of the Cold
Whether you’re parking your van for the season or gearing up for snowy road trips, now’s the time to get it winter-ready.
