Upgrading the Table System in a Thor Rize 18M

Sometimes the smallest upgrades make the biggest difference in how a van feels to live in.

That was definitely the case with this recent Thor Rize 18M project.

One of the final upgrades we completed was replacing the factory table setup and after using these vans, it’s easy to understand why this is such a worthwhile improvement.

The Problem With the Factory Table

If you own a Thor Rize, you probably know exactly what we’re talking about.

The stock table system has a few major issues:

  • It’s oversized for the space

  • Extremely heavy

  • Thicker than it needs to be

  • Awkward to maneuver in a small van interior

In a compact space, oversized components quickly become frustrating in everyday use.

The factory mounting system also leaves a lot to be desired.

While it functions somewhat similarly to a Lagun mount, it lacks the solid feel and hard stops that make the real Lagun system so functional.

The result is a setup that often feels:

  • Loose

  • Flimsy

  • Unstable during use

The Upgrade: A Better, Simpler System

For this van, we completely replaced the setup with:

  • A genuine Lagun mount

  • A custom-built tabletop made in-house

The difference was immediate.

Why We Like Lagun Mounts

There’s a reason Lagun mounts are popular in the van world:

  • Adjustable positioning

  • Smooth movement

  • Better stability

  • More flexibility in small spaces

This setup allows the table to:

  • Adjust in height

  • Swing toward the passenger seat if needed

  • Move easily depending on how the space is being used

For this client specifically, the table is primarily used from the passenger side, so we optimized the setup around that.

The Custom Tabletop

We paired the Lagun mount with one of our custom tabletops.

Compared to the factory table, the new version is:

  • Smaller

  • Much thinner

  • Significantly lighter

And despite being lighter, it’s actually more durable.

This tabletop was finished with sprayed Linex coating, creating a highly durable surface that can handle years of real-world use.

In Blake’s words:
“This thing is going to last longer than pretty much anything in the van.”

Why Small Changes Matter in a Van

Van interiors are all about functionality.

A component that’s slightly too big, too heavy, or awkward to move quickly becomes annoying when you use it every day.

That’s why thoughtful upgrades matter so much.

This table upgrade:

  • Opened up the space visually

  • Improved usability

  • Reduced clutter and bulk

  • Made the interior feel more functional overall

And all from changing a single component.

Final Thoughts

Not every upgrade needs to be a massive renovation.

Sometimes improving the small daily-use features, like a table system, can dramatically improve your experience inside the van.

If you’ve been frustrated with parts of your current setup, there’s usually a better solution.

And often, it starts with simplifying things.
