What We Found
Recently, we were working on a van and had the opportunity to see how a previous builder had framed the interior.
The framing itself was fairly standard half-inch plywood, which isn't necessarily a problem.
The issue was how it had been installed.
The wood was simply screwed directly into the sheet metal using wood screws.
No bonding adhesive.
No structural adhesive.
No additional measures to reduce movement.
Just screws.
At first glance, that might not seem like a big deal.
But over time, it can create problems.
Why Vans Squeak and Rattle
One of the most common complaints we hear from van owners is:
"My van squeaks."
"My cabinets rattle."
"Everything seems to move around when I drive."
In our experience, a large percentage of those noises originate from how the interior structure was assembled.
A van is constantly moving.
It flexes.
It vibrates.
It experiences thousands of miles of road impacts.
When components aren't properly bonded, those small movements can create noise and wear over time.
Why We Use Adhesive and Fasteners
At Adventure Life Vans, when we install wood framing, we don't rely solely on mechanical fasteners.
We also use structural bonding adhesives.
The adhesive serves several important purposes:
Helps distribute loads across a larger surface area
Reduces movement between materials
Minimizes squeaks and rattles
Creates a more solid feeling structure
Improves long-term durability
Fasteners still play an important role.
But the adhesive is often doing much of the heavy lifting when it comes to creating a quiet, rigid assembly.
The Difference Is Hidden
The challenge is that most owners will never see these details.
Once insulation, wall panels, and cabinetry are installed, the framing disappears.
From the outside, two vans may look nearly identical.
But behind the walls, the construction methods could be very different.
That's why choosing a builder is about much more than looking at finished photos.
It's worth asking questions such as:
How is the framing attached?
What adhesives are being used?
How are wall panels mounted?
What steps are taken to reduce noise and movement?
The answers often reveal a lot about the quality of the build.
The Details Matter
Anyone can build a van that looks good on delivery day.
The real test is how that van performs years later.
The small details like bonding framing properly before fastening it, may never show up in a glamour photo.
But they're often the difference between a van that feels solid and quiet after years of adventures and one that develops squeaks, rattles, and frustrations along the way.
