The Camper Van Build Detail You’ll Wish You Planned for Earlier
When you're building out a camper van, there are a million decisions to make.
Where should the fridge go? How much solar do you need? What kind of battery system makes sense? Do you want a fixed bed or a convertible setup?
And then there are the things you might not even think about until months, or even years later.
One of those things is pre-running cables for future accessories.
We recently had a client's van come back to our shop after more than two years on the road. She wanted to make a couple of upgrades, including adding a Starlink Mini.
The Starlink itself wasn't the complicated part.
The problem was that the van hadn't been pre-wired for an exterior connection when it was originally built.
That meant we couldn't simply connect the new equipment to an existing cable run. We had to open up part of the finished interior and work our way through the side and ceiling of the van to get the cable where it needed to go.
What could have been a relatively simple addition became a much bigger labor project.
Think About What You Might Want Later
This is one of those small decisions that can make a huge difference down the road.
Maybe you don't have Starlink today.
Maybe you don't think you'll ever need a cellular booster.
Maybe you're not sure whether you'll want an exterior antenna, additional connectivity equipment, or another accessory that hasn't even made your list yet.
That's okay.
You don't necessarily need to install every accessory during your initial build.
But if there's a reasonable chance you'll want something in the future, it's worth thinking about how you'll get wiring from point A to point B before the walls and ceiling are finished.
Running a cable during the build is relatively simple.
Running that same cable through an already-finished van can mean removing panels, opening up interior spaces, fishing wires through difficult areas, and then putting everything back together.
In other words, a little planning upfront can save a lot of time and labor later.
Building Your Own Van?
If you're starting with a stripped van, this is a great time to think through future upgrades.
Before the walls go in, consider whether you might eventually want:
Starlink or another satellite internet system
A cellular booster such as WeBoost
Exterior antennas
Additional solar or electrical components
Cameras or other electronics
Other accessories that may require wiring between the interior and exterior
You don't have to know exactly what your van will look like five years from now.
The goal is simply to identify the upgrades you're reasonably likely to want and create an easy path for the wiring now.
Buying an Already-Built Van?
This is worth adding to your inspection checklist.
When you're looking at a finished camper van, don't just ask about the appliances and battery system.
Ask about future-proofing.
For example:
“Are there any pre-run cables for future accessories?”
If you think you may eventually want Starlink, a cellular booster, or another exterior-mounted system, find out whether there's already a cable routed to the appropriate location.
It may not seem like an important feature during the buying process.
But if you decide to add something later, you'll be very glad you asked.
Build for the Van You'll Have And the Van You Might Have Later
One of the realities of van life is that your needs can change.
Maybe you start with weekend trips and eventually spend months on the road.
Maybe you don't think you need reliable internet until you start working remotely.
Maybe you decide that the fridge you've had for two years isn't quite cutting it anymore.
That's normal.
A good van build doesn't necessarily need to include every possible upgrade from day one. But it should give you reasonable options for making changes later.
That's where thoughtful planning matters.
